Jing, one of our most loyal customers, recently posted her Tan No. 150 Claw Belt after 100 days of use. Looks to be wearing in perfectly.

Her blog, Hands On With X, is a great photo-journal of product shots mainly in an around Canberra, Australia. It's interesting to see all of her product finds intertwined with her daily activities which usually include expertly crafted espresso drinks, tasty meals and mouth watering snacks not available in the USA.

Seasick Steve is a one of America's best blues musicians that you have never heard of. He palled around with Joplin and Cobain and helped produce albums for Modest Mouse and other indie lable artists yet the UK is where he is really embraced.

Let's all get behind this American bluesman so he pencils in few tour dates over on his native soil. His album, "Doghouse Music" is a must.

In DT Jersey City, where our design studio is, one can see a nice smattering of old hand-painted murals. Most of these have faded but they all have a story and represent yet another craft trade that has nearly become extinct, falling to technology, innovation and the almighty dollar.

The documentary, "Up There" by Malcolm Murray and presented by Stella Artoise really captures the emotion, pride and sheer hard work that goes into these massive paintings.

A poignant quote from the documentary:

"They (vinyl mural guys) can't print what we paint. They print in pixels you know...they mix colors optically...little dots...little dots...you know blue and yellow together make green but we paint green so we can make it a lot richer."

This quote reminds me of just how watered down our society has become when it comes to "richness, detail and texture." Digital and analog audio (CD's & cassette tapes) replacing records and digital pixels replacing 35MM film are other examples of how we have given up tone, highlights and image quality for convenience, cost and ease. Dont' get me wrong, most of these technological advances are great, especially the new Quad HDTV's but in my opinion some of these new forms of multimedia are actually steps back but are seen by the masses as huge steps forward.

Not just for bikes!

A customer had just purchased a new top-of-the line electric wheelchair for his wife and was looking for a pouch or bag to attach to it. He came across our web-site in his search and noticed our No. 211 Hand-Stitched Bike Pouch. We had to lengthen the straps a bit but, as you can see, it fits great and blends in quite nicely. That is one of the main principles we have always tried to adhere to in all of our designs - that our items blend into their surroundings and not necessarily be the focus of attention.

It rings very true and reminds me of my 20's when I went through one cheap frying pan after another when all I needed to do was save up a bit more and buy one that I could still be using today.

Of course, we are ultimatley to blame for our purchases and to some degree, learn from our mistakes. So, one shouldn't be all that surprised or "bitter" that their alarm clock for $5.99 didn't wake them up or that their $150 suit has lost its shape after only 6 months. When we were designing one of our iPod cases around 5 years ago this quote was very evident. After all, our Amish manufacturers probably have no idea what a phonograph is let alone an Ipod. When we visit them with new designs it is interesting to see their reactions. Andrew, co-owner and chef of Franny's on Flatbush Ave. in Brooklyn, recently sent back his nicely aging 3+ year old No. 150 Claw Buckle Belt in Tan to have a rivet repaired. We were happy to oblige and after it was all sorted out I snapped this shot. It's as good as new now. He also has a black one.

FYI - NY Magazine just ranked Franny's as having one of the top 20 pies in the city.

Bruce has a lot of East Coast shows coming up Sept-Nov. so get your tickets to see this American legend.

FYI - If you have been living under a rock and don't have his 1982 album Nebraska in your Ipod then check it out. It is one of my all time favorite albums.

Badlands, a 2000 tribute album featuring only songs from Nebraska, is a must as well. The whole compilation is really well done. The songs by Crooked Fingers, Ben Harper, Son Volt, Dar Williams and Chrissie Hynde/Adam Seymour are incredible.

Robert from Asheville, NC just sent me some images of his nicely worn-in Tan No. 92 card case with Jackalope emboss. Circa 2004.

The Jackalope is the unofficial mascot at Billykirk. I have always had a fondness for these critters and the folklore that surrounds them. You can find these stuffed jackrabbits with deer horns in pubs and bars/restaurants all over rural MN, WI and IA. After a long day of hunting or fishing we would inevitably end up at one of these hole-in-the-walls and there they would be staring down at you from the rafters.

Scott, a restaurant consultant in San Francisco, just sent these images of his well worn 1 1/4" No. 01 Plain Cuff in Tan. Yep, this was one of three designs we started with back in 1999. Hand-oiled with dull silver hardware this very understated cuff is quite a few years old judging by the old logos.

Located in an historic brick building in the Old Town neighborhood, Art in the Age is part artist collective, part performance space and part curiosity shop. Their very well edited collection is packed with interesting finds. Great concept, great content and helmed by some very capable people.

Another 4th of July at Liberty State Park. Always seems fitting with the Statue of Liberty in the background. We were in a different part of the park this year which gave Tilly a thrill. There is a tree line in the park that goes back maybe 15 feet that you can walk into. It leads to a fence line that encircles and protects a bird sanctuary. The fireworks this year were beyond that fence where we were positioned. It was nice and dark in there but she did not seen to mind even alone. She would run into it and disappear then she would run out excited. Eventually, staying in just long enough for us to squirm a bit.

Richard Haines, the mastermind behind What I Saw Today, captured the Brothers Bray in their somewhat natural habitat at the Pop Up Flea in Nolita. We had a blast conversing with the customers and hand-stitching a variety of one-off Billykirk items. Thanks to all of you who were able to make it down.

This isn't our first sketch and hopefully not our last by him. Richard visited the Guild Show in Vegas last year where one of our new travel bags caught his attention.

Richard is certainly no stranger to these terrifc, well composed flats. He was recently asked to do a series of sketches at the J. Crew Liquor Store in Tribeca and the new J. Crew Men's store in SOHO. He has worked for Calvin Klein, Bill Blass, Perry Ellis, Sean Combs, luxery hotels and does private commissions. Word on the street is that the fine fellas at 3sixteen are working on something with Richard.

J. Peterman may have put this form of fashion illustration on the map but Richard's brand breathes a certain life into it that is both honest and real.

My Father's Day Cards from Matilda (Tilly) who will be four in August.

Tilly: "You are wearing a red and green coat and your legs are kind of bent. That is me, I am wearing a green jacket. That is the computer and those are flowers."

Tilly: "Those are the steps going to the basement and that is the washer and dryer where mom washes 'Bluey' (her blanket). Those are the light bulbs and that is Percy (our cat)."

The mind of a 3 year old never ceases to amaze me.

Great Blog & Great Store

Archival Clothing is one of my favorite blogs. Lesli, who runs it, never ceases to amaze me. It is packed with interesting finds, historical imagery, Americana, cycling info, outdoor gear....the list goes on and on. Besides sharing an appreciation for the outdoors, cycling and American made goods we consult from time to time of various projects. We also both like Jordan Sayler's men's store, Winn Perry located in Portland, OR. Lesli lives near by and from time to time posts items from the store. Usually a Billykirk item will find its way into the post. Our Tan No. 155 card case below, a recent purchase by Lesli, was picked up at Winn Perry.

Looks to be aging quite nicley. The backdrop is Lane County, OR.

Jordan, the purveyer of this fine establishment is cut from a different cloth. Always impeccably dressed, he not only exudes a since of style not seen since the 40's but he also has no airs about him. I have yet to visit the Winn Perry shop but I can guarantee you it's one of the top men's shops in that region. One look at his offerings and you will be hooked.

1) The "K.I.S.S." Principle which means, "Keep it Simple Stupid." I was taught this in Marketing class at the U of M and refer to it regularly.

2) "Ornamentation Should Only Emphasize the Harmony of the Pieces but Must Not Dominate." By Harold Nielsen, the great silver designer at Georg Jensen. This quote is posted in our design studio.

3) "Beaten Paths Are For Beaten Men" Author unknown but in our industry this quote is paramount.

We decided to take our interns on a field trip to NYC the other day.......

We started out at Westpfal's Cutlery and Tools/Continental Dies. Westpfal's, has been in NY since 1874. We use them for all sorts of leather related things. If you are in NYC and that set of Trident Wusthof or Henckle knives are dull then this is the place to go. Carmella will take care of you. She has been there since 1951.

We then headed to some of our fabric and leather wholesalers and pawed around and got some samples. Libra Leather, arguably the best leather supplier in the US, is always an interesting event. Too much to choose from and their prices are sometimes a bit tough to swallow but if you want the leather Gucci uses for their saddles then this is the place. Mitch Alfus, the owner, is a character, big time collector and with 30+ years in the business knows everything there is to know. The Selby has a great profile on Mitch.

Hunger beckoned so John's Pizza on Bleeker was the unanimous decision. This West Village landmark has been around since 1929. Workers still haul up coal each morning to feed the old brick oven which gives John's Pizza its distinctive and addictive flavor. It's a must if you are visiting NYC.

It was a fun day. Thanks M, M and M. We really appreciate your energy, ideas and hard work. We are thinking an inspirational field trip to Dia:Beacon is in the cards next.

The Calligrapher, Ms. Betty Gilpin

If you are in the market for a calligrapher/script style writer look no further than this great lady. Betty is 81 and has been teaching and practicing this dying art form for 40+ years. Betty bought an art store in Nashville in the 70's when the Carter administration started offering business loans to women. Besides art supplies she also offered classes in calligraphy. My cousin in TN hired her to do her wedding announcements, envelopes. etc. Consequently, I had Betty do some script work for Billykirk. A few of the examples and her contact info are below. She is now working on some monograms for us to use on some linen stationary. I will post those images when I receive them. She is a sweet lady and a pleasure to work with.

Cell-Phone Images by Henry

Our last Amish manufacturer (2005-2008) did not have a call-box so we provided them with a cell phone that they kept charged at a neighbors house. I just found these images that Henry, the eldest son, took sometime in 2007-2008 on that very cell phone. It was a bit of surprise considering they are not supposed to have their photos taken. We certainly didn't photograph them when we were with them. But, since Henry took these of himself, I thought I would share them. I think the top three illustrate his funny side but all seem to show the huge pressures that are placed onto his shoulders. Henry was 18 at the time and the oldest of 11 kids. Sadly, in August of this year, they lost their father, Ben to Lymphoma.

Tyler from Providence, RI purchased his Cognac No. 03 Cuff at Louis Boston in 2000. Note the old logos and placement. This was made at our mentors factory before we had our own studio. Badwater Ultramarathon 7/14/08

The 31st running of the most demanding and extreme running race offered anywhere on the planet starts today.

I have been fascinated by the 135 mile Badwater Ultramarathon that takes place in Death Valley since the early 90's. Temperatures reaching 130 degrees, shoes melting to the road, the horrific preparation and training.....It's the ultimate test of ones mental and physical strength. There are no cash incentives and it's not televised. The highly coveted prize is a Badwater belt buckle which you won't receive unless you finish in under 48 hours. If you are interested in learning more about this race check out the documentary, "Running on the Sun."

It's safe to assume that all the men and women participating in this beast of a race are highly goal oriented individuals who will stop at nothing to achieve their goals. These same principles can be applied in business......

Her No. 123 Utility Pouch in brown leather with brass hardware and her No. 134 Journal in black leather with red waxed thread never leave her side. These will go on the front doors of the two level coop I recently built. Rosie and Jim were born on March 9th. Farm life Jersey City Style! I am hoping to get a few more chicks for Father's Day.

We love doing collaborations and this was a really fun one. Billykirk, Earnest Sewn and Scott Campbell of Saved Tattoo/Mama Tried Studios teamed up to create these one of a kind "Mother" inspired wallets and card cases. Scott designed the art work then laser engraved it onto each blank. There will only be 15 of each available at the upcoming Earnest Sewn Mother's Day event. Should be a great time. Vice & conveyor belts - Manischewitz Auction

The Manischewitz factory recently moved to Newark, NJ after being in Jersey City since 1932. At their closing auction we bought this old C. Parker Co. vice that had been with their company since the early 1900's. They also threw in over 50 rolls of old canvas conveyor belts. Kirk has started basket weaving some of the conveyor belts into super sturdy area rugs. He also has plans to paint on them. The smell of fresh matzo and crackers every morning is sorely missed.

One of the great things about leather is how it changes over time. We only use top quality harness leathers because they tend to take on the best patinas and last the longest. I will, from time to time, put up images that customers have sent us showing their worn in Billykirk items. The first is from best friend Paul of Stillwater, MN. This is his Tan No.01 Weave Cuff and it is approximately 7 years old.

Limited Edition Medallion for the Dalai Lama

We recently had the privilege of working with the Gere Foundation, Healing the Divide, and The Tibet Center in designing a V.I.P. badge commemorating His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama’s 2007 visit to New York City. Healing the Divide and The Tibet Center wanted to transcend the typical V.I.P event lanyard and create a unique token to present to their Sponsors, a token that would last longer than the event and perhaps be worn or carried for years to come.

Enter us, Billykirk.

We decided early on that it probably wasn’t the best idea to incorporate leather into a design meant to honor the Dalai Lama and after a bit of research, we designed a unisex, solid brass medallion that could be worn around the neck or wrist by a custom-dyed hemp cord. Made from a wax model and cast in brass, each medallion is engraved on both sides. The front of the medallion reads, ‘My religion is kindness’ which we sampled from a well-known quote of the Dalai Lama’s, "My religion is simple, my religion is kindness." The back of the medallion reads, ‘His Holiness the Dalai Lama New York October 2007". Decorating the edge of each piece are 108 small indentations which represent the 108 malas on a traditional Buddhist prayer bead bracelet. The medallions were then tumbled in order to give them a "worn river stone" look and hand-strung with polished Hungarian hemp cording, thanks to Marisande Fisher of Radiant Hemp. She was about the only one who could get the specific cording we were looking for and was also able to dye it to match the color of His Holiness’ robes. For this limited edition, only 200 pieces were cast.

Wrapped in our signature bag and custom-stamped with the two organizations’ names, the medallions were given to Sponsors for special V.I.P entry into Radio City Music Hall. When we arrived at Radio City to see all of our medallions being worn in honor of this “simple Buddhist monk”, we were very pleased by the end result. To later learn that His Holiness was personally presented with one was the icing on the cake.

We were not alone in this collaborative effort and want to especially thank our talented friend Mollie Rodriguez of the Gere Foundation and Healing the Divide for her unyielding support. We’d also like to thank our brilliant production team for the energy and creation they put into this project.

Bag the Habit collaboration with Kirk Bray

We met Liz Long, the owner of Bag the Habit, about a year ago. A neighbor of ours, who knew of our leather business and experience, asked if we could give some advice to a friend of hers who was starting a reusable shopping bag business. We were intrigued and decided to meet. Over some danish’s and coffee we shared our ideas and suggestions. Liz's business was essentially ready to launch and we really loved her ideas and the name “Bag the Habit.” We were both immediately struck by her focus and dedication. I think after that first meeting we both sort of knew her business would really take off despite any words of wisdom we might have bestowed.

Last summer, knowing Kirk was a painter, Liz asked if he would be interested in doing an artist collaboration piece with a natural canvas tote. There were around 25 artists who participated in the event. I think he was quite pleased with how his "City Bag" came out. He used oil paints and covered the whole bag. He removed the existing straps and added some natural, vegetable-tanned ones. It was a great event with a very important message. It was held at the Lex Leonard Gallery in Jersey City and the most of the proceeds were donated to the New York City’s Gaia Institute. The show was titled, REDUCE and it highlighted the impact of plastic shopping bags as well as other disposable products. Something we all need to be more mindful of.

Empire State Plaza buildings in Albany, NY

Coming back from a long weekend in Vermont we went through Albany, NY for the first time. As we approached the city these slender modernist buildings came into view. I was able to snap this shot as we went buy. They make for a really amazing backdrop. When we got back I did a bit of research and found out that they were built from 1968-1976 and were designed by the architect Wallace Harrison. Harrison was a modernist and influenced by the International Style. He also designed the Rockefeller Center, Time Life Building, Metropolitan Opera House, etc. The Rockefeller Apartment building, across from the Museum of Modern Art's sculpture garden and finished in 1939, is equally interesting and beautiful. Some say it may be one of the most completely designed buildings in the city. I attached a few images of the attention to detail that exists all over the Rockefeller Apartment building. He was friends with Moses, Chagall, Le Corbusier, and Léger. Andrew Calder's first show is said to have taken place at his home.
